About

My name is Arushi. I work on how genetic variation changes the way genes are regulated, and on what it takes to see that: genomes, epigenomes and transcriptomes measured in the same human tissue, a nucleus at a time.

Most of what I do starts with a genome-wide association study and ends somewhere far more specific. A GWAS points at a stretch of the genome. Everything after it is statistical finemapping, molecular QTL mapping and colocalization, until a signal resolves into a variant, a regulatory element, a cell type, and a gene it acts on. Lately that has meant single-nucleus RNA and ATAC profiling across more than 400 human skeletal muscle samples, and work spanning academia and industry through the AMP-CMD and FUSION consortia.

I am an assistant research scientist at the University of Michigan, in Steve Parker's lab, where I also did my PhD in human genetics. Before Michigan I studied bioengineering at EPFL and biotechnology at IIT Guwahati.

Training people is a large part of this job and one of the better parts of it. I have mentored high-school, undergraduate, master's and PhD students, two of whom are co-authors on papers listed here.
